While the Old-Fashioned Festival celebrates years of
tradition, it also provides opportunity to experience new
entertainment.
A local bluegrass group will make an appearance at the Old
Fashioned Festival from 2 to 4 p.m. July 27.
Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising will take the stage to perform
"original hard driving bluegrass and Americana music".
Members of the Portland-based band include Boyd, Tim
Crosby, Dennis Nelson and Tom Tower. The group uniquely
originated out of a business plan envisioned by Boyd. Although
each musician had to audition in order to join the band, the
members have developed deep friendships, Boyd said.
"Along the way, everyone found out that we all actually
like each other, which is a very nice benefit," she said.
As a result of being successfully marketed, Boyd said, the
band has grown in popularity at a fast rate. The group
specializes in festivals, weddings and other events aiming to
provide customers with quality music and customer service.
The band claims an experienced, yet fresh sound, as its
members have performed together in various combinations over
the past 30 years. The group has spent the past three years
together, writing a mixture of bluegrass, Americana, cowboy,
folk and country tunes.
In early 2007 the band released its first CD, "Burning Down
the House," receiving international airplay.
Last year, the band traveled throughout the West Coast and
British Columbia, Canada, and continues a more extensive
touring season this year, including its stop in Newberg.
"Our goal is to take the music to wherever people want to
hear us," Boyd said. "I love the interaction and response from
the crowd. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their
stories."
Boyd provides the bass beat to Phoenix Rising. She has
performed as a member of Something Blue ..., No Strings
Attached, Knock 'Em Stiff, The Pickups, The Oops Band, City
Council and throughout the western United States and Canada
with various musicians both on stage and in the recording
studio.
Crosby, the group's fiddle and mandolin player, has
performed with Briarose for more than 30 years, The Flying
O'Carolan Brothers, LuckPenny and throughout the United States
with a number of musicians both live and in the recording
studio. Crosby has shared the stage with Bill Monroe, David
Grisman, Don Edwards, Baxter Black, and Riders in the Sky.
Tower plays both the banjo and Dobro for Phoenix Rising. He
performed as a member of Briarose for more than 30 years, No
Strings Attached, Knock 'Em Stiff, The Pickups, and The
Sussefusse International Dance Orchestra. Tower has performed
throughout the world with various musicians both on stage and
in the recording studio.
Singing tenor is Nelson, playing lead and rhythm guitar. A
previous resident of Newberg, Nelson has performed as a member
of several bands during his travels through Wisconsin, Oregon
and Alaska.
All band members are songwriters, and nearly all of the
material they perform is original.
